A glossary of expressions in modern dating:

  • Benching: when someone puts a potential relationship on hold for the sake of a more promising one

  • Breadcrumbing: when someone leads a romantic interest on, and drops bits of attention here and there

  • Catfishing: the person pretends to be someone else online, and has a different name and looks different in real life

  • Cloaking: the new ghosting includes cutting off all communication, and being blocked as well

  • Cushioning: one or both people might begin flirting with others to cushion the final break-up blow if a romance isn’t going well

  • Dateview: being drilled about children and marriage on the first date (like an interview)

  • Ghosting: when someone abruptly cuts off all communication without providing any explanation or warning

  • Haunting: when someone re-emerges from the state of ghosting, and engages with your social media

  • Honesty bombing: when people have honest conversations about the future, family, children and careers from the first date to avoid wasting time

  • Kittenfishing: the persons looks better on their online profile than in real life.

  • Monkeying: bouncing from relationship-to-relationship with no time in between

  • Orbiting: when someone keeps in touch every now, and again

  • Phubbing: ignoring someone to look at a phone

  • Zombieing: when someone disappeared, and suddenly comes back into your life
