Safety Tips

Whenever meeting someone new, be sure to keep these safety tips top of mind for online dating here, and tailored support and services for LGBTQIA+ communities here.

The Golden Rule is to make your first meeting in a public place. Examples of good meetings places include shopping centres, cafés, and restaurants because there are always plenty of people nearby. Never meet in a secluded spot or someone else’s place.

Next, tell someone who you are meeting and where.

ALWAYS REMEMBER: If you are in immediate danger, call the police on 000. If you need crisis support, call Lifeline Australia on 13 11 14.

Other tips:

  1. Take your time to get to know someone. Ask lots of questions and make sure you feel comfortable.

  2. Get your friends to help. Arrange for a friend to call you at an agreed time to check that you are okay. That way, if you want to leave the date you can pretend the phone call is an emergency and you can leave.

  3. Be in control of your transport. Have your own transport or way home such as a ride-share app or a friend to pick you up.

  4. Protect your personal information. Make sure you have a secure password, and never give personal details.

  5. Be wary of people asking for money. No matter how genuine it sounds, the person is likely a scammer. DO NOT SEND MONEY.

  6. Report all suspicious and offensive behaviour. You know when someone has crossed your boundary. Some examples include:

    • Requests for money

    • Harrassment

    • Threats

    • Inappropriate or offensive behaviour

    • Fraud

    • Spam

    • Solicitation

  7. Consent matters. All sexual activity must start with consent and should include ongoing check-ins with your partner. Consent may be withdrawn at any time. Do not proceed if your partner seems uncomfortable or unsure, or if your partner is unable to consent due to the effects of drugs or alcohol. Read more here.

  8. Know your limits. Be aware of your tolerance of drugs or alcohol.

  9. Don’t leave drinks or personal items unattended. Only accept drinks poured or served directly from the bartender or server. Keep your phone, wallet, and anything containing personal information on you at all times.

  10. Trust your gut feelings. It is ok to leave if you feel uncomfortable.
